The All-American Classics
By Rusty O'Dowd
Tall Dome
16-oz Budweiser "Tall Boy" at Yosemite National Park, California
Captured some time in late 1968, this is perhaps the earliest recorded example of beer photography. O'Dowd has said little about what inspired him to shoot this image on a chill November day, but third-party sources claim that he was in the throes of a two-day drinking binge and may not have been in full control of his faculties.

Lost Brew
20-oz Lost Coast Ale on the Marin County coast, California
Although later discovered to be a clever forgery by one of O'Dowd's proteges, "Lost Brew" captures the exuburent spirit of the age through the subtle interplay of ocean, sky, landscape, and beer.

Painted Lady
12-oz Anchor Steam at Alamo Square, San Francisco, California
O'Dowd displays a wry irony with this work, a commentary on the smug self-satisfaction and regimented conformity of middle-class America. At this stage -- the mid-1970s -- O'Dowd's work had departed from his earlier style, and he began to alienate many of his followers.
