The Emergency Fog Alert System

The sudden arrival of a killer fog storm can be deadly for those who are unprepared. For this reason, FogWatch.com has launched the Emergency Fog Alert System (EFAS).

The EFAS consists of ultra-high-resolution Web cameras stationed at strategic locations throughout San Francisco. These cameras are under constant surveillance by a team of crack meteorological experts stationed on the HMS FogWatch, laying at anchor in a Golden Gate Park lake.

If the EFAS team determines that a fog front is approaching, they issue a Fog Alert to warn residents of the storm's arrival, via their special FogLine connection directly to City Hall.

Fog storms are graded on a five-point scale based on severity. The following are the different storm grades, and an example of each:

Fog Alert, Level 1
Sunny and warm in most districts of the City, occasional high clouds. Light mist developing along the coast, with gentle breezes forming from the west. Outdoor activity safe for all ages. Flight restrictions at SFO International.

Fog Alert, Level 2
Mist begins solidifying in the western neighborhoods, with fog banks penetrating to the 19th Avenue/Park Presidio line. Reduced visibility along the coast. Winds pick up to 5-10 MPH from the west. Small craft advisory outside the Golden Gate. All runways closed at SFO International.
Fog Alert, Level 3
Fog line pushes east to Stanyan Street. Visibility ceiling in fog-affected neighborhoods drops to 70 feet. Winds up to 25 MPH. Small children, the elderly, and those with heart conditions are discouraged from travel to the western side of the City. SFO International placed on 5 p.m. curfew.
Fog Alert, Level 4
Fog forces its way east to envelop entire city. Visibility ceiling to 25 feet, winds to 40 MPH. General travel safety advisory in force throughout the City. Small children, elderly, and those with heart conditions ordered to remain indoors. Ban on ground travel to, from, and within SFO International.
Fog Alert, Level 5
Extremely hazardous conditions. Zero visibility throughout San Francisco. Gale force winds. General ban on travel for all but emergency personnel. City residents urged to remain indoors at all times. SFO International evacuated.
