America's Heartland
By Rusty O'Dowd
|
Remember the Alamo
20-oz Lone Star, the Alamo, San Antonio, TX
"America's Heartland" is a triptych of photos that represents O'Dowd's effort to expand his palette from the western U.S. to the broad expanse of middle America. "Remember the Alamo," the first work in the series, finds O'Dowd visiting this monument to Texas independence. Contrary to rumor being spread at the time, O'Dowd did not urinate on the structure after this photo was taken.

Brew of Steel
12-oz Iron City, Pittsburgh, PA
The steely vision of this photo reflects O'Dowd's iron willpower in bringing his vision to life. Set on a rusty balustrade overlooking the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh, "Brew of Steel" exemplifies the spirit of a city -- and an artistic movement -- too tough to die.

Arch of Inebriation
40-oz Budweiser, St. Louis, MO
By the end of the "America's Heartland" tour, O'Dowd was artistically and alcoholically spent. "Arch of Inebriation" finds the artist barely able to keep the subject beer propped up straight. In addition, the beer's label is twisted to one side, as if both subject and photographer are about to careen off as one into the Mississippi River.
