The Admiral's Picks -- Food
The following Admiral's Picks have been selected according to rigorous criteria established by the crew of the HMS FogWatch. We hope you find these listings useful in your travels around the City. Your Admiral, Rear Admiral Phineas Fogg-Bottom 21st Amendment Brewery Cafe 563 2nd St. @ Brannan Street 415.369.0900 $$$ 21st Amendment is a relatively new watering hole for the FogWatch crew, having been established just recently. It serves up better-than-average brewpub fare in a gorgeously restored red brick warehouse. The pub's beer selection recreates styles from the 40 breweries found in SF at the turn of the century (the 20th, that is). If your preference for beer tends toward the adventurous side -- as does the Admiral's -- then try the Old Cornelius Barley Wine (9.6% alcohol/volume). Barney's Gourmet Hamburger 4138 24th St. @ Castro Street 415.282.7770 $$ A favourite of burger aficionados from all over San Francisco. Barney's finds new ways to pair the conventional hamburger patty with an inventive array of toppings. Make sure you get the curly fries, but order a half-basket -- even the crew of the FogWatch has trouble taking down an entire basket. Big Mouth Burgers 3392 24th Street @ Valencia Street 415.821.4821 $ Big Mouth does burgers right. You can have your beef plain, or order it with any of a variety of intriguing toppings and spreads (the Admiral's favorite is the Chipotle Mustard spread). Big Mouth's fries stand out too -- big steak fries that can carry a half-cup of ketchup. And the beer couldn't get any colder. Firecracker Restaurant 1007 Valencia Street 415.642.3470 $$$ Firecracker is one of a recent wave of new restaurants that update traditional Chinese cuisine with a modern twist. The food is excellent, but be prepared to wait...this tiny place is smaller than a barrel's bunghole, and always has a line. Gordon Biersch Brewery 2 Harrison St. @ The Embarcadero 415.243.8246 $$$ Location, location, location. With its prime spot almost directly beneath the Bay Bridge, you can't match Gordon Biersch for fabulous views of the newly remodeled South of Market waterfront. If you're lucky, you'll get a seat on the heated deck, where you can watch the boats and Muni trains drift by. If you're not so fortunate, take a seat inside, where the noise generated by hundreds of on-the-make Generation Y knowledge workers will render you senseless in less than 90 minutes. The beer tends to outshine the food here -- no surprise for a brewpub. La Taqueria 2889 Mission Street @ 25th Street 415.285.7117 $ The Mission District is packed with taquerias, but few are worthy of note. That is, except for La Taqueria. It is the unanimous opinion of the FogWatch crew that this unassuming eatery on Mission near 25th Street serves up the best burritos in the City. Short on filler and long on flavor, La Taqueria is a welcome standout in a culinary niche were mediocrity reigns supreme. La Taqueria's grilled beef is without equal, while its quesadillas offer up a tasty appetizer. Manora's Thai Cuisine 1600 Folsom St. @ 12th Street 415.861.6224 $$$ Arguably the best Thai food in San Francisco. Manora's serves up to-die-for cuisine with friendly service and an elegant atmosphere. Located in the heart of the City's nightclub zone, Manora's can be a bit crowded at times, but it's always worth the wait. Mitchell's Ice Cream 688 San Jose Avenue 415.648.2300 $ Simply the best ice cream in San Francisco, bar none. No matter where you are in the Mission, it's always worth stopping by for an after-dinner treat on the way home. Red's Java Hut $ Granted, it's not the best food in SF. In fact, the burgers are just slightly more appetizing than warm shoe leather. But when it comes to reliving a slice of old San Francisco, Red's is an institution. Head down on a sunny day, get a burger and a beer, and enjoy your lunch outside among the seagulls, imagining what San Francisco was like in the days when you didn't have to be a high-tech millionaire to afford a studio apartment. Suriya Thai Restaurant 1432 Valencia Street 415.824.6655 $$ Once one of the best-kept secrets in the Mission, Suriya has since been discovered by aficionados of fine Thai cuisine. It may be a little harder to get a table right away, but it's still worth the wait. Suriya Thai serves up inventive dishes with creative names like Evil Jungle Prince and Money Bags. Their pumpkin curry is like ambrosia. Back to Food page>>>>> Home || About FogWatch || Food|| Sights || Bulletin Boards || Weather Copyright © 2003 FogWatch.com |
