An excellent question. But I think you have your priorities mixed -- a better question is, what months are BEST for the fog?

That said, it's clear that the fog season in San Francisco traditionally starts on the date of The Enshrouding, typically June 1. The fog layer is at its best from June 1 through mid-September.

It's a common misperception among locals that the fog ends with the end of August. This is not true. September is often wonderfully foggy and cool.

October is the cruelest month, with temperatures reaching their zenith (this is often difficult for Auslanders to understand, but 'tis true nonetheless). November is unfortunately quite clear and occasionally uncomfortably warm as well.

December through early March are traditionally the "winter" months, and the fog tragically never makes an appearance. The fog can return as early as April (this year is a good example, with summer-like fog patterns occuring as early as April 7).

I hope this sufficiently answers your question.
