"Below the Waves" is a groundbreaking photo in that it represents the first beer image ever taken below the surface of the ocean. Hale Akele was experimenting with an underwater camera while pearl diving at Tunnels State Beach. Spotting a mysterious object on the sea floor, she promptly snapped a photo and returned to the surface.

Hale Akele initially failed to recognize the significance of what she had done, and continued to labor at her pearl-diving job for some months. However, one day a connoisseur of alcoholic photography noticed the print in her divers shack, and insisted it receive wider recognition. The rest is history.
